David was born on Sunday, December 1, 1929 in Omaha, Nebraska. The second child of Lewis Raymond "Lum" and Mary Ruth Fitzgerald Doyle.
David was a theater and television actor and was known for playing the part of john Bosley, assistant to the invisible boss on the television show "Charlie's Angels". The show ran from September 22, 1976 to August 19, 1981. David also played Ted on the Dick Van Dyke Show. David began his career at the age of 10 when he was in a community theater production of "Life With Father." He later attended the University of Nebraska and in 1950 joined the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.
David then served in the United States Navy and was stationed in Havannah, Cuba. After four years of service he returned to New York and made his Broadway debut replacing Walter Matthau in "Will Sucess Spoil Rock Hunter?" Other shows David acted in was: "In, Act One," "No way to treat a Lady," "Paper Lion," "The pursuit of Happiness," "A new leaf," "Making it," "and Who killed Mary what's emame?" David met his wife Anne when they were both appearing in "South Pacific" playing at the New York's Lincoln Center.
David moved to the Los Angeles area in 1972 and found steady work. His television work included the mini-series "The Blue and the Gray," and appearances in the series "Murder, She Wrote." "Love Boat," "Fantasy Island," "Hart to Hart," "Lois and Clark," and "Sunset Beach."
David was also the voice of the grandfather in the Nickelodeon cartoon series "Rug Rats" for several years before his death.
David and Anne resided in Encino, Los Angeles Co., California.
