Biography of William Barnabas Doyle....
William was born on Saturday March 5, 1825 in Doylesburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the third and youngest child to Thomas John Sylvester and Anne (Taylor) Doyle.
William was raised on the family farm in Doylesburg, Pa. and received a limited common-school education. When he was 13 years old William became an apprentice as a cabinet maker in Shippensburg, Pa.
Some time later William went to visit with his brother Thomas John Doyle, a manufacturer of fanning mills at Williamsport, Md. While visiting, William was determined to go to Tiffin, Ohio, to begin in business.
Taking a boat on the canal, which met with an accident at Johnstown, Pa., William walked from Johnstown to Pittsburgh (ninety miles), where he worked a few months and then resumed his journey, stopping at Akron, where he got a job at his trade.
In 1842, William worked as a journeyman at his trade, and in the Fall bought the business of his employers. Several years later William, being short of funds, fell back with the rent, and in the Spring he made a trip to Pennsylvania, where he made some collections, and returned, and paid his rent. William eventually sold the business looking for different ventures.
In 1845 William married Phoebe Budd of Akron, Ohio. Phoebe passed away nine years later in March of 1854. They had no children.
William went into the cattle business for fifteen years as a member of the Doyle & Chamberlain firm. He then occupied a farm near Akron he had previously bought, and lived on same for four years, when he sold the place and stock for $16,000.
On Tuesday October 30, 1855 William, married for the second time 20 year old Harriet Sage of Monroe County, New York. They had three children, Dayton Augustine, Willie Eugene, and Charlie Doyle. Both Willie and Charlie died during childhood.
Harriet passed away of consumption on Saturday November 6, 1862. Harriet is buried in section "C", lot 574 of the Glendale Cemetery in Akron, Ohio.
In 1865, going back to his old home in Pennsylvania, William decided to go to Tennessee, but having had some business in Akron, he visited the city, and while there William purchased the lumber and manufacturing business of S.G. Wilson for $35,000 and organized the firm of W. B. Doyle & Co., entering into business with John H. Dix and Daniel Farnum.
On Sunday June 9, 1867 William married for the third time to Mary Ann "Maude" Lautz, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Sypher) Lautz. They had four children, William Barnabas, Jr., Della May, Dean Lantz, and a infant daughter who died during childbirth.
Six days after their infant daughters death, Mary Ann passed away at the age of 34 years, on Thursday February 12, 1874 of heart trouble. Mary is also buried in section "C", lot 574 of the Glendale Cemetery in Akron, Ohio.
On Tuesday January 16, 1877 William married for the fourth and last time to Louisa Baird of Mogadore, Summit County, Ohio. They had one child, Anna Louise Doyle.
After 1888 William became the sole proprietor of the business until his death from lagrippe on Wednesday August 6, 1890. William is buried in section "C", lot 574 of the Glendale Cemetery in Akron, Ohio.
The business was then conducted by his eldest son and executor, Dayton A. Doyle, Esq..
